Asus announces a bug fix for its Transformer Prime

January 22nd, 2012 No comments

TAIWANESE GADGET MAKER Asus has announced an update for its Transformer Prime owners to fix graphics bugs.

The Transformer Prime is set to be one of the most popular tablets of the year but has been hit by a couple of initial flaws. Users will get an over the air update starting today to fix a problem with its graphics.

Asus announces a bug fix for its Transformer Prime

Asus said on Facebook, “ICS 4.0 FOTA update for Transformer Prime TF201 from today (UK) will fix on-screen graphics bugs (previously some horizontal stripes and signal noise during video playback & pad rotation).”

Unfortunately this doesn’t solve a problem with the device’s GPS caused by the metallic material used for the case. Asus has removed it from the specifications sheet.

Earlier this week Asus confirmed a problem with the Transformer Prime WiFi hardware, but luckily this is one bug that doesn’t affect units in Blighty. It has offered users unhappy with the problems a full refund or an extension of their warranty. µ

Apple Announces Digital Textbook Availability, iBooks Author App

Apple Announces Digital Textbook Availability, iBooks Author App

Apple today announced that it would begin offering digital textbooks on the iPad via its iBooks app. The books, which currently focus on high school-level subjects but will later expand to cover the entire K-12 curriculum, can cost up to .99, and Apple is working with publishing companies such as Pearson, McGraw Hill, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, and DK Publishing to make it happen. The textbook store is available in iBooks 2.0, which requires iOS 5 and is currently available as an update to the original iBooks app.

The digital textbooks can include interactive elements like pictures, video, or 3D models, which will be displayed more prominently while the tablet is in landscape mode, while flipping it into portrait mode will display a text-centric view. Students can highlight text in multiple colors and take notes, and use the app to automatically display flash cards of their highlights and notes mixed in with glossary terms from the book. Glossary terms, usually displayed in bold, can be tapped to bring up definitions of the word both from the book and from the built-in dictionary, and the text is fully searchable.

Of course, most of these features are imports from existing eBooks and old-school educational CD-ROMs – embedded video, highlighting, note taking, and many of the other things Apple showcased aren’t new innovations, though they appear to be implemented well here. More interesting was the iBooks Author app for OS X, available for no cost in the Mac App Store.

iBooks Author is used to create these interactive textbooks – pictures, videos, and Keynote presentations can be dragged into any of the provided templates, and authors of existing books can import their Word or Pages files to save time. More advanced coders can also create interactive widgets using HTML and Javascript. Publishing books requires an iBookstore seller account, the iTunes Producer app, and an active iTunes Connect contract with Apple – a full FAQ is available here. Once all of these requirements are met, the book can be submitted to Apple for review. Textbooks have a maximum size limit of 2GB.

The technology behind all of this looks solid – iBooks Author makes eBook authoring and publishing relatively painless, and buying the books on the iPad is cheaper than buying a physical copy, at least at face value. Carrying around a single iPad is much less burdensome than carrying a book, and the ease with which students can look up words, take notes, and review material is impressive.

Even so, to my mind there’s a sizable gap between what Apple announced today and something that could truly make digital textbooks ubiquitous: the cost of entry, i.e. either purchasing an iPad for each student’s use or mandating that students purchase iPads for school use, is fairly high, even if you figure for a conservative 3-4 year replacement cycle (and even with AppleCare, iPad warranties run out after two years, making a 2-3 year cycle more likely, especially once you factor in iPads that are dropped, spilled on, or otherwise destroyed). Over time, the reduced cost of the books may offset the cost of the iPads, but the upfront cost (along with the cost of supporting the devices) is likely to scare away cash-strapped public schools. The announcements made today are less likely to revolutionize education, and more likely to increase the usefulness of iPads in school systems that are already using them.

iBooks Author requires Lion and is currently available for free in the Mac App Store. iBooks 2.0 is available for the iPad, iPhone, and iPod Touch as an upgrade for the original iBooks app, though digital textbooks are not available on the smaller devices.

Motorola announces a home hub and phones before CES

January 5th, 2012 No comments

US GADGET MAKER Motorola has announced a raft of products prior to next week’s consumer electronics show (CES) in Las Vegas.

Motorola announces a home hub and phones before CES

The Motorola Connected Home Gateway is all about being connected to and controlling your home. The device has a 1.2GHz processor and Motorola’s Open 4 Home software.

Users will be able to control things like home security and energy from devices such as smartphones, tablets and PCs at home or remotely.

Dan Moloney, president of Motorola Mobility said, “People want anywhere, anytime access to their digital lives. Our suite of award-winning products addresses the new ways that people are embracing their connected lifestyle in the home.”

The firm has also announced two smartphones called the Motoluxe and Defy Mini. These apparently will “break boundaries, but won’t break the bank”.

The Motoluxe is the more kitted out and “hip” of the two with a 4in touchscreen, Android 2.3 Gingerbread and an 8MP rear facing camera. Like the HTC Rhyme it will have a lanyard that lights up when you get a text message or a call.

On a slightly less exciting note is the Defy Mini, a pint sized version of the Defy+ that we reviewed last month. It too offers a dust proof, scratch resistant and waterproof design with a 3.2in touchscreen, 3MP camera and 1650mAh battery.

Both phones will come with Motorola’s Switch user interface and will be available in February. The company hasn’t announced pricing for these products yet. µ

Lenovo announces its Thinkpad T430u Ultrabook laptop

January 5th, 2012 No comments

CHINESE PC MAKER Lenovo has announced its next Ultrabook class laptop prior to next week’s consumer electronics show (CES) in Las Vegas.

The T430u Ultrabook is Lenovo’s follow-on to the U300s, which it announced in September. The T430u will be on show at CES next week and will be available in the third quarter in the UK with a starting price of £545.

“The T430u Ultrabook represents the next generation in thin and light computing,” said Dilip Bhatia, vice president of Thinkpad at Lenovo. “From small businesses that literally live their life on the road to corporate professionals working in a managed environment, these new crossover laptops fundamentally change the way people think about mobile computing technology.”

Like all Ultrabooks the laptop will come in a slim and light design at 20.3mm thick and less than 1.8kg. It will have a matte finish with an aluminium cover and will be available with a 14in high definition screen.

The T430u will come with an unknown Intel processor. The words “third generation” were mentioned in the pre-CES briefing we attended but Lenovo has not confirmed whether its Ultrabook or other laptops will have Sandy Bridge or Ivy Bridge processors. The latter seems more likely.

It will come with an optional Nvidia graphics card and up to 1TB of disk storage or a solid state disk (SSD). Lenovo touts a battery life of up to six hours and features such as quick resume and fast boot. It will also be the first Ultrabook with a DVD drive according to the firm.

The Lenovo T430u will have to compete with other recent entries to the Ultrabook category such as Toshiba’s Z830 and Asus’ Zenbook UX31E. We expect Ultrabooks to make a large showing at this year’s CES. µ

LG announces world’s largest OLED TV ahead of CES

January 3rd, 2012 No comments

SMILEY FACED FIRM LG has announced a 55in organic light emitting diode (OLED) TV.

At 55in the TV is set to be the world’s largest OLED TV, according to LG, which has a current OLED TV that is just 15in. The firm will show off the large flat panel TV at next week’s consumer electronics show (CES) in Las Vegas.

LG announces world’s largest OLED TV ahead of CES

“Working closely with LG Display, we have a product which not only delivers on all the advantages of OLED over LCD but at a significantly lower cost than what could be achieved using existing OLED manufacturing technologies,” said Havis Kwon, president and CEO of LG.

“OLED is clearly the future of home TV entertainment and LG is very focused on making this exciting technology as easy as possible for consumers to embrace.”

Not only is the panel large, the TV is wafer thin at just 4mm and weighs only 7.5kg. LG said it will incorporate its four colour (red, green blue and white) pixels and Colour Refiner features to deliver natural and accurate colour.

“Such colour capabilities are technically impossible with LED and LCD display panels,” said LG.

According to Bloomberg the TV will be 3D and web capable and might go on sale in the second half of this year. µ

AOC announces an Apple Iphone docking monitor

December 26th, 2011 No comments

DISPLAY MAKER AOC has announced its e2343Fi monitor with a docking port for Apple’s Iphone.

The firm will be showing off the monitor for Apple fanbois at the consumer electronics show (CES) next month in Las Vegas. The AOC e2343Fi will come with a 23in screen capable of blowing up images from the Iphone by a factor of 37.

AOC announces an Apple Iphone docking monitor

AOC said it’s “a design display aimed at the Apple fan community with its many millions of followers.”

Because Apple products all use the same proprietary connector you can also dock different Ipod models but the Ipad is probably a bit big to place in front of your monitor.

The monitor also has speaker with SRS sound so you can use the monitor to watch films or listen to music from the docked Igadget. It’s also just a handy place to keep and charge your Apple device while at your computer.

AOC said it will also have a narrow framed 3D monitor at CES along with one that is powered and receives its signal via USB, which we reported on in September. µ

Acer announces its Iconia Tab A200 tablet

December 4th, 2011 No comments

TAIWANESE PC MAKER Acer has announced its Iconia Tab A200, a cut down version of its existing tablet.

We expected the A200 to be a follow-on from the A100 tablet, but at 10.1in it’s more of a sequel to the firm’s A500 model. Strangely not much has changed in comparison with the A500 that Acer launched earlier this year.

The A200 has a specifications sheet similar to that of its predecessor with the same Nvidia 1GHz Tegra 2 processor, 1GB of RAM and a 2MP front facing camera. In other areas the tablet has been downgraded with only 8GB or 16GB of internal storage instead of 32GB and no rear facing camera.

Acer announces its Iconia Tab A200 tablet

With a newer model we expect the device to be thinner and lighter, which the A200 is. It is 0.9mm thinner at 12.4mm and 45g lighter at 720g than the A500, but this doesn’t look good when you stand it up against tablets like the Asus Transformer Prime, which is just 8.3mm thin and weighs only 586g.

Acer said, “Ideal for sharing good times via gaming, e-books, movies, music, photography, social networking and more, this tablet is an amazing hub of activity for people of all ages, and it comes at a very affordable price.”

The firm said that the tablet will come with Android 3.2 Honeycomb and that an upgrade to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich will arrive in January. The only reason for buying this rather unimpressive looking device that we can see is the “affordable price”.

The A200 will offer eight hour battery life, a microSD card slot, WiFi and a full sized USB port. It’s a bizarre effort from Acer that leaves us wondering how it will sell this. µ

Apple announces a Black Friday sale

November 23rd, 2011 No comments

FRUIT THEMED Apple has announced its own Black Friday sale that will take place this Friday.

The INQUIRER received an email this morning which read, “Friday only: The special one-day Apple shopping event.”

It added, “Every gift list has its day. Mark your calendar. This Friday, 25 November, is the special one-day Apple shopping event. Visit your favourite Apple Retail Store or shop online all day.”

Although it’s not yet clear which items will be on sale, the fruit themed gadget maker’s teaser page that appeared at its online stores said customers can get “amazing iPad, iPod and Mac gifts” during the event.

Last year, Apple’s Black Friday deals weren’t great, with just 0 off Imac, Macbook Pro and Macbook Air computers. There was also off the Ipad, and a discount on the Ipod Touch.

Whatever the deals available in the Apple sale this year, The INQUIRER is sure they will be more attractive than Amazon’s Black Friday deals, which aren’t exactly up to scratch this year. We are however, tempted by a garden rake we have seen at Amazon for £20, down from £30 – that certainly beats any Ipad discounts Apple can throw at us. µ

The Toughpad FZ-A1 will be a 10.1in tablet equipped with a Marvell 1.2GHz processor, 1GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage. Panasonic said it will make a 7in version of the Toughpad in the second half of 2012.

A 3G version of the Toughpad will be available for €1,199 (£1,027). µ

ST-Ericsson Announces Inclusion in Future Nokia Windows Phones

November 2nd, 2011 No comments

Up until now, if you wanted a Windows Phone, it'd implicitly come with a Qualcomm SoC inside. The Windows Phone platform started out with QSD8x50 (first generation Snapdragon), and has recently moved to MSM7x30 and MSM8x55 (second generation) SoCs, all single core. Today, ST-Ericsson has announced that it too is joining the fray with its dual core NovaThor SoCs inside future Nokia Windows Phone smartphones. We haven't seen much of NovaThor since its arrival, but its U5500, U8500 and U9500 SoCs bring dual core Cortex A9 CPUs and ARM Mali-400 GPUs alongside some onboard cellular connectivity.

As we discussed previously, Nokia's initial Windows Phone lineup (consisting of the Lumia 800 and 710) is based on 1.4 GHz MSM8255 SoCs. This announcement from ST-E appears to be directed at the next iteration of Windows Phones up Nokia's sleeves. We look forward to Windows Phone heating (and speeding) way up with this move to dual core in the near future.
