Alienware launches its X51 pint sized gaming desktop

January 19th, 2012 No comments

GAMING PC MAKER Alienware has launched its X51 compact desktop PC for gamers who are short of space.

The Alienware X51 is designed to give consumers a powerful machine capable of high-end gaming without compromising on size. Alienware said the X51 is its smallest ever gaming desktop.

Alienware VP Arthur Lewis said, “The Alienware X51 allows us to bring the exciting nature of high-definition, immersive gaming within reach of more gamers than ever before,”

“With the X51, we’ve expanded our gaming desktop offering to cater to all gamers in addition to our core enthusiast and competitive gamers. Now everyone can enjoy the latest games on a sleek, powerful, compact and customisable system. The X51 desktop delivers an incredible feature set for its size and price.”

The case is certainly compact, especially when sat next to the Alienware Aurora that the company launched last month. Design-wise the X51 doesn’t look too dissimilar to the Xbox 360, not a bad thing in our eyes.

Prices start at £699, which will get you an Intel Core i3 processor, 4GB of RAM, a 1GB Nvidia Geforce GT545 graphics card and a 1TB hard drive. According to the firm this setup delivers an average frame rate of 34fps in Battlefield 3 with high settings and HD 1080p resolution.

If you fancy splashing out a bit more cash then you can opt for an Intel Core i5 or Core i7 chip, up to 8GB of RAM and an Nvidia Geforce GTX555 graphics card.

Other specifications include Windows 7 Home Premium, a DVD burner, WiFi, USB 2.0 and 3.0 ports, an HDMI 1.4 port and internal high definition 7.1 audio. µ

GAMING PC MAKER Alienware has launched its Aurora gaming PC that uses the latest Intel X79 chipset.

The Aurora is aimed at enthusiast gamers and comes jam packed with the latest hardware centred on an Intel Core i7-3000 six-core processor that is factory overclocked. It’s liquid cooled and the firm claims it’s the “most advanced gaming desktop ever made”.

“The PC gaming industry continues to grow rapidly, and our customers are demanding systems that can keep up with the most graphic-intensive games on the market,” said Arthur Lewis, VP of product management at Alienware. “Alienware Aurora, our most advanced gaming desktop ever, delivers an experience that will exceed the expectations of any serious gamer.”

Alienware offers a wide range of graphics card options from a single 1GB AMD Radeon HD 6870 up to a dual 2GB AMD Radeon HD 6950 with Crossfirex. The Aurora caters for performance tinkering with an unlocked BIOS.

Rounding off the specifications is a choice of 8GB or 16GB of quad channel 1600MHz DDR3 RAM and a traditional hard drive with up to 2TB capacity. For extra performance users can upgrade to a 256GB or 512GB solid state disk (SSD) drive.

Alienware products do tend to come accompanied by a high price tag and the Aurora is no exception, as it is priced at £1,999 for the least expensive configuration. µ

Origin PC Offers Ready-To-Ship Gaming System

origin rts 575px Origin PC Offers Ready To Ship Gaming System

We've only had the opportunity to look at one Origin PC so far, and while the performance was impressive the packaging was equally so—Dustin had to struggle to get the large wooden crate into his place. Origin does have some seriously high-end (almost ludicrously so) PCs that you can put together if you're willing to shell out, but some people just want a reasonably high-end PC that's ready to go with a minimum of fuss. And if you're thinking of getting something for the holiday season, a ready-to-ship system could be exactly what you need. Enter the Origin Millennium RTS.

Origin states that it will ship within one day of your payment being processed, and what you'll get is a pretty high-end setup ready to run all the latest and greatest games. Here's a quick rundown of the specs—the only area you can customize on the RTS build is the warranty.

Origin Millennium RTS Specifications

Pricing

,799 online, ships in one day from payment processing

If you're like me, the first thing you're going to do when you see the above list is to go spec out how much it would cost you to put everything together yourself. Never fear, I have already done that (substituting the Corsair H80 for the Origin cooler, as that seems to be similar), and my total price for the parts comes to ,675, plus around for shipping (with pricing predominantly coming from Newegg, linked for your convenience).

We might have a few quibbles with the parts selection—specifically, I'd like to see a large secondary HDD included, and while the Bitfenix Shinobi is a good case I'd be more inclined to go with a Fractal Design Define R3 personally—but overall this is a beefy gaming system priced just 0 over what it would cost for me to put together the same system. In fact, my own gaming/work PC is running a stock GTX 580 with a Core i7 CPU, and even with a 30" LCD I've found that the GTX 580 is able to handle nearly every game I've got at near-maximum details. Given that my time (and your time) isn't free, if you're happy with the part selections and you want your new gaming system ASAP, we have no qualms about recommending Origin's latest offering.

Microsoft could be planning a gaming phone

September 27th, 2011 No comments

SOFTWARE DEVELOPER Microsoft could be considering a gaming phone like Sony Ericsson’s Xperia Play.

According to Kotaku, a patent that was first filed in 2010 and last week made public shows a smartphone with a slide-out design. The patent focuses on the slide-out part of the handset being interchangeable so it can either be a keyboard or a control pad useful for gaming.

We think a Microsoft gaming handset is a good idea. It’s about time it used its Xbox brand more effectively. However, its Xbox integration will need to be better than it is at present on Windows Phone 7 to stop it from becoming a bit of a dud like Sony Ericsson’s Xperia Play handset.

The Xperia Play has seen its price slashed across the board recently, partly because at its nearly £500 full price, it is a little too expensive for most gamers’ tastes. µ

Corsair Enters the Gaming Keyboard & Mouse Market with Vengeance

September 16th, 2011 No comments

In a private media event this week Corsair unveiled its latest contribution to the PC industry: gaming keyboards, mice and headsets. All of these new peripherals fall under the Vengeance brand. The motivation behind this move is simple: starting with memory and eventually expanding into power supplies, SSDs and cases, Corsair wants to be your one-stop shop for nearly everything you need for your PC. The CPU, motherboard and video card markets are either impossible to get into or undesirable for a manufacturer that doesn't already play in those spaces, leaving peripherals as one of the only options for expansion.

Traditionally companies avoided getting into the peripheral space because you have to compete with very wealthy and experienced competitors: Logitech and Microsoft. With Logitech trying to expand into other areas beyond peripherals it appears that Corsair is hoping that its competitor will lose a bit of its focus. Whether or not this works out for Corsair remains to be seen, but let's look at the products.

Vengeance Headsets

Corsair has dabbled in headsets already but with the Vengeance brand it expands the line considerably. Starting this October the company will offer three different Vengeance headsets priced from up to .

The Vengeance 1500 is the top end SKU with two 50mm drivers, simulated 7.1 surround sound and USB support (integrated audio codec). The 1300 is the same as the 1500 but substitutes in a 1/8" stereo plug instead of USB.

Vengeance Keyboards & Mice

The entire Vengeance peripheral lineup is targeted at gamers. Start focused and expand beyond there seems to be the strategy. Corsair's initial keyboard & mice offerings are targeted at two genres of games: MMO/RTS and FPS. All of the Vengeance keyboards & mice feature an aluminum construction.

The MMO/RTS targeted products are called the Vengeance K90 and M90. The K-series are for keyboards while the M-series refer to mice. The K90 is backlit with over 90 individual LEDs (almost one behind every key). It uses Cherry MX mechanical red switches for each key which have a 2mm actuation travel (4mm total travel). There's no accompanying click sound with these keys, they have a nice linear but springy travel to them. The Cherry MX red switches apparently require the least amount of force to actuate out of their entire lineup of switches. Corsair claims the keyboard will recognize up to 20 simultaneous keystrokes.

The MMO/RTS focus comes in with the K90's 18 customizable macro keys. You can switch between three different sets of macros, for a total of 54 total macros. The macros are defined using Corsair's Vengeance gaming software.

The corresponding mouse is the M90:

The M90 uses an Avago ADNS-9500 5700 DPI laser sensor. The mouse has 9 customizable side buttons.

On the FPS side there are the K60 and M60. Let's start with the K60:

The aluminum chassis and Cherry MX red mechanical switches are both present, but the individual key lights are gone as are the macro keys. The K60 instead ships with a removable wrist wrest (which is actually quite comfortable) and easily removable, textured WASD and 1-6 number keys. When not in use, the textured keys can be stored in the wrist wrest. The feel of each keypress remains the same as the K90, but the macro keys are gone and the styling of the K60 is a bit different.

The M60 mouse includes a sniper button that allows you to quickly switch between high and low DPI modes (customizable in software).

Final Words

I had some brief hands on time with all of the newly announced Vengeance peripherals, they all felt good but it'll take much longer than a short play session to really evaluate these things. I'm mostly curious to see how well these things do in the hands of hardcore gamers. Does Corsair have what it takes to pull customers away from the likes of Logitech, Microsoft and Razer?

Corsair's new Vengeance lineup will be available starting next month.

Gamestop is making an Android gaming tablet

September 13th, 2011 No comments

US GAMING RETAILER Gamestop has confirmed it is making an own brand gaming tablet that will use Google’s Android operating system.

The device is not brand new but rather an existing Android tablet that the firm will customise with pre-loaded games. The unknown tablet is in a testing phase but will come with an external controller, according to Gamesindustry.biz.

Tony Bartel, president of Gamestop said, “We’re in test phase right now. But we’re excited at the prospect of coming out with this tablet. I would call it a ‘GameStop certified gaming platform.’ We looked at all the tablets and these are the ones that really worked for gaming and we’re going to give you a few benefits that you’re not going to get elsewhere.”

It is unclear whether there will be the option to use two or more controllers on a single tablet, but we hope so. Gamestop plans to stream console games to the device. This sounds like the service might be comparable to Onlive, which is due to arrive on 22 September.

Gamers can expect demanding games to be available and playable on the tablet after Bartel commented that streaming a game such as Call of Duty: Modern Warefare 3 would be hard to play with your fingers.

We think that the tablet will most likely be a larger size of 10.1in rather 7in for a better gaming experience. If we were to put money on it we would bet the tablet will have an Nvidia Tegra 2 processor, which in our experience is suited to gaming.

We’re not convinced that gamers will opt to use a tablet for serious gaming over their PC or console. µ

MSI announces its GT780R and GX780 gaming laptops

June 15th, 2011 No comments

TAIWANESE PC MAKER MSI has announced two gaming laptops with the snappy model numbers GT780R and GX780 that it will release in the UK next month.

These laptops aimed at all you gamers out there have been designed in partnership with the gaming peripherals maker Steelseries. Both have an Intel Sandy Bridge Core i7 processor clocked at 2GHz.

MSI announces its GT780R and GX780 gaming laptops

They are both pretty beastly in size, sporting full HD 17.3in anti-reflective screens with 1920×1080 resolution. Both have Dynaudio speakers with a built-in subwoofer and THX Trustudio Pro for cinema quality surround sound.

Graphics cards are where the two differ slightly, with an Nvidia GeForce GTX 560M with 1.5GB of RAM in the GT780R and a slightly less impressive but still respectable Nvidia GeForce GT555M with 1GB of RAM in the GX780.

From the MSI product pages we gather that the GT780R has 16GB of RAM whilst the GX780 has less at 12GB. The GT780R also has a larger hard drive at 1TB compared to the GX780′s 750GB.

Both have USB 3.0 and HDMI ports and feature MSI’s Turbo Drive Engine technology, which MSI said “provides a boost in graphics performance to accelerate video decoding and add extra excitement to your gaming”.

Both are the same size and weight, measuring about 55mm thick and weighing just under 4kg.

The Steelseries keyboard supports 10-key simultaneous input, for those moments when you’re required to mash the keyboard with all you’ve got, and customisable LED backlights reminiscent of Alienware’s gaming laptops.

MSI hasn’t been able to give us UK pricing yet and told us that the specifications could change by the time the laptops tip up in Blighty. But to give us an idea, in the US the GT780R will cost ,749 and the GX780 will cost ,549. µ

CyberPower’s X6-9300 and MSI’s GT680R: Fighting for Your Mobile Gaming Dollar

May 14th, 2011 No comments

Choosing a laptop can be a pretty confusing experience, because even if you have a good idea of what features and components you’d like, finding a laptop with them isn’t always easy. Once you do find the right features, you have to decide if you like the way the notebook looks, and in the mobile gaming world that often means living with a lot of gloss and bling, or going for the polar opposite with a dull black plastic shell. We have two gaming notebooks that happen to fall squarely into those categories, but there’s a lot more to the packages than that simple description.
